Sending everything to dry cleaning wastes money, and putting the wrong things in the washing machine ruins them. Here’s a quick way to decide.
What laundry is fine for
Cotton shirts and T-shirts, jeans, everyday kurtas, gym wear, bed sheets, towels and pillow covers are made to be washed in water. Wash and fold laundry is the right and cheaper choice.
What should be dry cleaned
- Wool suits, blazers and overcoats, which shrink and lose shape in water
- Silk sarees and silk kurtas, which lose sheen and bleed colour
- Embroidered, sequinned or zari work
- Velvet, structured jackets and anything with padding
- Leather and suede
Our dry cleaning covers all of these, with shirts from ₹89 and coats ₹249.
Read the care label
A circle symbol means dry clean; a crossed-out tub means don’t wash. “Dry clean only” should be taken seriously. “Dry clean” alone means it’s recommended, but gentle hand washing may be possible. More in our guide to care label symbols.
Grey areas
Linen shirts and cotton-silk blends can often be washed gently but come out crisper after dry cleaning. Woollen sweaters can be hand-washed cold but often shrink at home.
