Drying indoors
Run a fan or AC in the drying room, space clothes apart, and don’t fold anything that is even slightly damp. Damp clothes folded into a cupboard are the main cause of musty smell. Many families switch to a weekly wash and fold pickup just for these months.
Protect the cupboard
- Keep silica gel sachets on each shelf and replace them monthly
- Leave cupboard doors open for an hour on dry days
- Don’t store clothes in plastic bags during the monsoon
Leather, silk and wool
Leather shoes and jackets can grow white mould; wipe them and let them breathe. Silk shows water spots easily, and wool smells when damp. These are best dry cleaned and stored with good air flow.
Bed linen and towels
Towels that never fully dry develop a sour smell. Wash them more often in the monsoon — see bed sheet and towel laundry.
