A genuine pashmina can last decades, but it’s a fine fibre that pills, felts and attracts moths if handled carelessly.
Wearing
Avoid rough bags, brooches and Velcro that pull threads. Remove perfume and let it dry before putting the shawl on; alcohol-based scent can mark the fibre.
Cleaning
Pashmina doesn’t need frequent cleaning — airing in the shade after wearing is often enough. When it does need cleaning, avoid hot water and wringing, which felt the wool. Professional shawl dry cleaning is the safest option, especially for embroidered or kani shawls.
Storing
- Always clean before storing at the end of winter
- Fold, don’t hang — hanging stretches the fibres
- Wrap in cotton or muslin, not plastic
- Use neem leaves or cedar, not naphthalene
Pilling
Small balls of fibre on the surface are normal with use. Remove them gently by hand; don’t use a razor on fine pashmina.
