How to Store a Bridal Lehenga After the Wedding

A bridal lehenga is usually the most expensive outfit in the wardrobe and the one most likely to be damaged in storage. Heavy embroidery, zari and sequins react badly to sweat, moisture and tight folding. These steps keep it wearable for the next function — or the next generation.

1. Clean it within two weeks of the wedding

Sweat, perfume, mehendi, haldi and food marks may not be visible on the night, but they oxidise over a few months into yellow or brown patches that are much harder to remove. Getting the lehenga, choli and dupatta cleaned soon after the event is the single most important step. Heavy pieces should be cleaned individually — see bridal lehenga dry cleaning.

2. Never store it in plastic

The plastic cover from the shop is for transport only. Plastic traps moisture, and in NCR’s monsoon humidity that means mildew and a musty smell. Use a breathable white cotton or muslin cover.

3. Fold loosely with tissue

Lay the skirt flat, place plain white tissue paper over the embroidered areas and fold loosely so the work doesn’t press against itself. Avoid hanging a heavy lehenga by its waistband for months; the weight pulls the seams.

4. Keep zari away from metal and light

Real zari tarnishes when it touches metal hangers, naphthalene balls or sunlight. Store it in a dark cupboard and use neem leaves or cedar blocks instead of naphthalene.

5. Air it every three months

Unfold it, let it air in the shade for an hour, and refold along different lines. This prevents permanent crease marks and lets you spot problems early.

6. Clean again before the next wear

If it’s been stored for a year or more, a light clean before wearing it again brings back the drape and removes storage smell.
