What you do in the first few minutes decides whether a stain comes out completely or leaves a permanent mark. These rules work for most fabrics.
The three golden rules
- Blot, don’t rub — rubbing pushes the stain deeper and damages fibres
- Use cold water first — hot water sets protein stains like milk, egg and blood
- Don’t iron or tumble dry a stained garment — heat makes stains permanent
Tea and coffee
Blot, then rinse from the back of the fabric with cold water. On silk or wool, just blot and get it cleaned within a day or two.
Curry, haldi and oil
Haldi is one of the hardest stains in Indian households. Scrape off excess, blot, and avoid soap with bleach on coloured clothes. Oil stains need a solvent, which is why they respond well to dry cleaning — see dry cleaning.
Ink and lipstick
Don’t add water to ink; it spreads. Blot and leave it for a professional. Lipstick is oil and wax based, so blot gently and avoid hot water.
Tell your cleaner
When you send a stained garment, say what the stain is and how old it is. That decides the treatment. Fresh stains on wedding wear are covered in our wedding wear section.
