Most clothes damage at home happens because the label was ignored or misread. The symbols follow an international system and only take a minute to learn.
The washing tub
A tub means the item can be washed in water. Dots or a number inside show the maximum temperature: one dot is cold, two is warm, three is hot. A hand in the tub means hand wash only. A crossed-out tub means do not wash with water at all.
The triangle (bleach)
An empty triangle allows any bleach. A triangle with two diagonal lines means non-chlorine bleach only. A crossed-out triangle means no bleach — common on coloured and printed clothes.
The square (drying)
A circle inside a square means tumble drying is allowed; dots show the heat. A crossed-out version means no tumble dryer. A square with a curved line at the top means line dry; a horizontal line means dry flat, which is important for sweaters.
The iron
Dots show the temperature: one for synthetics, two for wool and silk, three for cotton and linen. A crossed-out iron means no ironing, often on sequins and some synthetics.
The circle (professional cleaning)
A plain circle means the item can be dry cleaned. A letter inside (P, F or W) tells the cleaner which method to use. A crossed-out circle means no dry cleaning.
When in doubt
If the label says “dry clean only”, or the fabric is silk, wool, velvet or embroidered, don’t risk the washing machine. Send it for dry cleaning — it’s cheaper than replacing it.
